Greetings from the Council Chairman
Osaka has flourished as the commercial center of Japan since ancient times and is a region that has an innovative spirit while still respecting its traditions. The area is a hub for manufacturing companies and has contributed to the world in life science fields with regenerative medicine which utilizes iPS cells as well as public hygiene fields such as water purification. It is now a major metropolis boasting a population of 8.83 million people and a GDP of about 39 trillion yen.
In June 2019, Japan's very first "G20 Summit" will be held here in Osaka. At the summit, leaders from major countries will gather to hold a wide range of discussions on the common issues of the global economy as well as the international community.
Holding the G20 Osaka Summit does not only improve Osaka’s status as an international metropolis but is also a great opportunity to send the world a message that “Osaka and Kansai contribute to the world” and that “Osaka and Kansai are safe and secure.” In Osaka, we are promoting a “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, in other words, a sustainable society where everyone can live happily, and in good health. While taking this opportunity to inform the world about our progressive initiatives, we are also working on improving our candidacy for the World Expo 2025 which also conforms with the philosophy of SDGs. The success of the G20 Osaka Summit will accelerate our chances of hosting the Expo.
During the G20 Osaka Summit, about 30,000 people including delegates from each country, domestic and foreign press and security officials are estimated to visit Osaka. We expect inconvenience in a wide area due to traffic restrictions. In order to make the G20 Osaka Summit which has great significance to Osaka and Kansai a successful event, we ask for your understanding and cooperation.
Let's welcome everyone including the leaders from each country with the best of Kansai’s hospitality.
